Speed Settings Overview:
LifeSaver Mobile has the ability to monitor, provide audible warnings, and record speeding violations for drivers. LifeSaver monitors speeding by periodically sampling a driver's speed as compared to posted speed limits as provided from third party services. Audible warnings for speeding can then be presented to drivers in a near real real-time manner.
Why use a sampling approach?
- Ensures a higher level of accuracy that speeding is occurring before penalizing the driver.
- By taking additional location services and posted speed samplings better reliability is achieved.
- Better identifies the persistent speeders
- With a sampling approach the worst offenders will still be identified over time without penalizing a driver speeding temporarily to pass slower vehicles, for example.
Posted Speed Violations:
With LifeSaver Pro, you can enable posted speed violations for your drivers in the portal. Posted Speed Violations are reported when the Speed Tolerance is exceeded for a prolonged period of time. A violation will be triggered when a driver is speeding above the speed tolerance set for the number of consecutive speeding event checks you have configured.
For a Posted Speed Violation to occur, first the driver must be driving above the tolerated speed that you set in the portal. This triggers the initial speeding event and the app begins to monitor for subsequent speeding events. Second, the driver must also be driving over that tolerated speed during consecutive speeding event checks. You can configure the number of consecutive speeding events required before a violation is triggered. The minimum number of speeding events that can be set is two. The time between speeding event checks, once the initial speeding event has been triggered, is 20 seconds for city driving (speeds below 60 MPH) and 45 seconds for freeway driving (speeds of 60 MPH and above).
The tolerance setting establishes how many miles above the posted speed limit will define a speeding event. The duration setting establishes how many times the speeding event has to occur in order to trigger a reportable speeding event. The figure below is an example of how a Posted Speed Violation is triggered when Speed Tolerance is set to 5 MPH and the Duration Tolerance is set to three events.
Enabling Posted Speed Violations:
- In the portal, navigate to the Manage Corporate Policy page.
- Scroll down and locate the "Speeding" section.
- Toggle the "Report Speed Violations" setting "ON".
- Locate the "Posted Speed Violations" setting.
- In the box below "Speed Tolerance" enter the maximum speed over the speed limit that is tolerated.
- In the box below "Duration Tolerance" enter the number of consecutive speeding events required to trigger a violation.
- At the bottom click "Save & Apply".
Note: Speeding violations are an additional charge. If you are interested in turning on speeding violations please contact support.
Audible Speed Warnings:
With LifeSaver Pro, you have the option to warn drivers audibly, through their mobile device, if LifeSaver detects they are going above the posted speed limit. A customizable text to voice message is played prior to the violation being reported so they have time to slow down and avoid a violation. We recommend at least 2 speeding events be detected before an audible warning be sent prior to an actual violation being recorded to give the driver a chance to decrease their speed. To achieve this, the Duration Tolerance should be set to 3. In addition, you can enable an Audible Violation message as well, to be played once a violation has been recorded. Audible Violations will be presented to the driver for posted speed violations and Max Speed violations.
Enabling Audible Speed Warnings:
- In the portal, navigate to the Manage Corporate Policy page.
- Scroll down and locate the "Speeding" section.
- Make sure the "Report Speed Violations" setting is toggled "ON".
- Locate the "Posted Speed Violations" setting.
- Ensure the "Audible Warnings" setting is toggled "ON".
- In the "Warning Message" box, type the audible warning you would like spoken to drivers before they receive a violation, or leave blank to keep the default warning.
- Ensure the "Audible Violations" setting is toggled "ON".
- In the "Violation Message" box, type the violation message you would like spoken to drivers when they receive a violation, or leave blank to keep the default violation message.
- At the bottom of the page click "Save & Apply".
